Rape & Statutory Rape

Protection Against Rape Charges

Allegations of rape will damage your reputation. A conviction can change your life forever.

Understanding this, the attorneys at Conaway & Strickler, P.C. conduct thorough investigations on behalf of the clients we serve who have been accused of rape crimes. We make every effort to shield our clients from public scrutiny, and build powerful cases designed to clear their names and minimize the impact of the charges they face.

Committed Criminal Defense

Our firm is based in Atlanta. This enables us to serve clients throughout the nation. We are well-versed in cases involving rape and other serious sex crimes. Even though the state must prove your guilt, we are proactive in protecting your rights and interests. We dissect the complaint and testimony of the alleged victim, and we build compelling cases designed to show that you should not be convicted of:

  • Rape: Rape involves forcible sexual penetration of a victim against his or her will. Conviction for rape can result in a prison sentence that ranges from 25 years to life imprisonment to death. We have successfully obtained dismissals and acquittals for those facing such charges.
  • Date rape: Date rape offenses fall under the same statute as rape. As such, it can lead to an extremely harsh sentence if you are convicted. Date rape situations often involve alcohol, intoxication, faulty memories and remorse. If the alleged victim is ashamed of having sex, he or she may file rape charges to protect his or her own reputation. Since these cases are heavily scrutinized by the courts and the media, it is important to get professional legal defense involved as soon as possible to begin to discredit the false allegations immediately.
  • Statutory rape: Statutory rape results from having sexual intercourse with someone who is under the age of 16. The consequences for this offense vary, depending on the age of the parties involved. If the alleged offender is 21 or older, the prison sentence imposed will be from 10 to 20 years. If the victim is 14 or 15 and the alleged offender is no more than three years older, a conviction results in up to one year in prison.

Conviction for any of these offenses also requires mandatory registration on the Georgia sex offender registry. As such, offenders face a lifetime of social ostracization, and often have difficulty finding long-term housing and employment prospects.
